Flamengo defeats Internacional and seals qualification in the Brazilian Under-20 Championship
Vitor Gabriel scores again in a decisive game for the Ninho Boys
By Nathan Mello - inIn a match held on Wednesday night (01), at Raulino de Oliveira, in Volta Redonda, the Garotos do Ninho beat Internacional 1 x 0 (Vitor Gabriel) and after three years qualified again for the second phase of the Brazilian U-20 Championship. The second phase of the national tournament starts next week. After the draw that will be held on Thursday morning at the CBF headquarters, two new groups will be formed. After the first and second rounds with games within the group, the first two placed in each group will be in the semifinals of the Brazilian U-20 Championship.
The game:
Just like the night in Volta Redonda, Flamengo started the match cold. Inter dominated the game until the 20-minute mark. The team from Rio Grande do Sul managed to scare goalkeeper Hugo Souza on two occasions. In the first, the Colorado player received the ball unmarked in the six-yard box and shot wide of the net. Heitor then unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, forcing the Flamengo goalkeeper to palm it over the bar.
The game dragged on for much of the first half, with both teams lacking attacking opportunities that ultimately failed to produce any real danger. Near the end of regulation, Dantas had a header opportunity following a corner kick, but it went over the bar. In the 42nd minute, Reinier, surrounded by five opponents, found Vitor Gabriel in the box. The number 9 controlled the ball and turned to finish in the corner to open the scoring for the Mais Querido.
After the break, Inter again started with good chances, but the "Garotos do Ninho" relied on a strong performance from Hugo Souza. Volnei unleashed a beautiful shot from the edge of the box, but the Flamengo goalkeeper flew into the top corner to make the save. Following the play, Heitor collected the rebound from the corner kick at the edge of the box and took a low shot that brushed the post, but Flamengo's number 1 was alert and went for it.
Mengão responded to Inter's attacks. Klebinho took a corner kick, Vitor Gabriel deflected it at the near post, and Reinier headed it toward goal from a poor angle, but the ball crossed the opponent's goal and didn't go in. The red-and-black goal was ripe for the match at this point. Wendell made a great run down the left from the defensive half, bursting into the box and passing to Bill, who shot from close range, but goalkeeper Lucas palmed it away.
The 1-0 scoreline qualified both teams, but neither team spared any effort to score. In the 28th minute, Hugo Souza once again saved Flamengo from conceding an equalizer. Edson fired a well-placed shot from the edge of the box, and Hugo made a stunning save to prevent a goal for Flamengo.
And so Fla achieved the result it needed to guarantee qualification for the second phase of the Brazilian Championship.
