Fla's youth team takes second place in the Rio Metropolitan Championship
Mengão's kids faced Vasco in the final, but left the field defeated 2-1. Wendell was the competition's top scorer.
By By Fernando Vieri - Flamengo Official Website - inFlamengo's youth team (U-13) finished second in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitano, the equivalent of the state championship. The Flamengo boys faced Vasco in the final, which was played on Sunday morning (November 02.11nd) at the Olária stadium, better known as Rua Bariri. Despite playing more effectively, Flamengo's youngsters were defeated 2-1.
The category match is played in two 35-minute halves. The game took place under a blazing sun, but that didn't dampen the joy and excitement of the boys, who defended their team's colors with zeal. At the end of the match, the Mais Querido squad saluted striker Wendell, who scored the team's goal in the match and received the award for top scorer of the competition. Wendell scored 21 goals in total.
Coach Gilmar Popoca obviously wanted the win, but he acknowledged that his young players played well. The boys from the youth team, all born in 1999, will be promoted to the junior category in 2013.
