If Flamengo has a tough game against Atlético-PR at the Raulino de Oliveira Stadium this weekend for the Brazilian Championship, the youth team's youngsters will also have an important match in the Steel City next Wednesday (November 03.11). The red-and-blacks will face the home team, Volta Redonda, in the fight for first place in Group F of the Octávio Pinto Guimarães Cup.
The two teams are tied for first place with 12 points. Tigres is right behind with 11. After drawing with Barra Mansa and beating América in the final rounds, coach Paulo Henrique's team is once again dreaming of first place. For full-back Alex, the team is on the right track in its quest for the title.
"We're incredibly motivated. We didn't start well, it's true, but the team is working hard and wants to prove its worth. The victory over the weekend put us back in the running, and now it's up to us. Every match will be a final, and qualification depends solely on us," he said.
Jorbison agrees, but he's also thinking about the future. According to him, a strong campaign in the OPG also serves as preparation for the Brazilian U-20 Championship, which begins in November.
"This game is a final for us. If we win, we'll take the lead. For our generation, the OPG is very important. By winning, we'll increase our value and also prepare well for the Brazilian Championship," he added.
Among Flamengo's new additions is striker Thomás, a standout player for the team that won the Rio de Janeiro U-17 championship, who replaces Guilherme, who is currently playing for the senior team. Flamengo's likely starting lineup for the match is: Cesar, Alex, Marlon, Matheus, and Jorbison; Frauches, Luiz Antônio, João Vitor, and Rafinha; Thomás and Dudu.
