In a classic match played Thursday night at Raulino de Oliveira Stadium in Volta Redonda, Flamengo played a great match, one of their best in the entire competition, coming from behind to defeat Vasco 3-2 (Vitor Gabriel, Dantas, and Yuri). With the victory, the "Garotos do Ninho" (The Boys of the Nest) reached nine points in Group F of the Brazilian Championship, opening a five-point gap over third-place Vasco and Fluminense, who have only four, and moving closer to qualifying for the semifinals. A draw in the last two rounds is enough for Flamengo to secure a spot. If Vasco and Fluminense draw in the next round, Flamengo will automatically qualify. Flamengo returns to action on September 12th, when they visit Coritiba at Couto Pereira.

The teams were still lining up on the field when, three minutes into the match, the red-and-black defense clashed heads, and the ball fell to Marrony. He dribbled past Hugo Souza and opened the scoring for Vasco. The Boys from the Nest regained their composure and entered the game, counting on the support of the fans, who turned out in good numbers at Raulino de Oliveira Stadium. Ten minutes in, Michael crossed, Wendel headed the ball in, and defender Ulisses knocked the ball away from Vitor Gabriel, who was poised to equalize the derby. 

Flamengo once again threatened in the 26th minute. Klebinho crossed and Vitor Gabriel only managed to head it clear, forcing goalkeeper João Pedro to stretch to make a great save. In the 29th minute, Reinier provided a good pass to Vitor Gabriel. Unmarked inside the box, he controlled the ball and struck hard, forcing another good save from João Pedro. Vasco came close to extending their lead in the 32nd minute through Hugo Borges. But it was Vasco who scored. With 35 minutes of play, Reinier once again found Vitor Gabriel in a well-positioned position, and this time he made no mistake. With a beautiful touch, he knocked the ball out of the goalkeeper's reach and evened the score by watching the ball capriciously hit the post before going in, leveling the score.

The comeback almost came in the first half. In the 38th minute, Klebinho sent a corner kick to Vitor Gabriel's head. He made a conscious touch, but the ball went just wide of the Vasco goal's left post. In the 42nd minute, Lucas Santos burst into the box and struck a powerful shot. It was Hugo Souza's turn to make a great save and palm the ball out for a corner, the last goal of the first half.

Flamengo continued to dominate the second half. Just two minutes in, Reinier made a good individual play and hit a powerful, but high, shot. Vasco had a dangerous free kick in the 12th minute. Lucas Santos took the shot, and Hugo Souza made another good save. Marrony headed the free kick, and the Brazilian national team goalkeeper made another stunning save, keeping the score tied. 

The breakthrough finally came in the 17th minute. Klebinho delivered a superb free kick, and striker-defender Matheus Dantas stepped up to score another goal against Vasco, putting the Boys of the Nest ahead. In the 22nd minute, Lucas Santos struck powerfully, and once again, Hugo Souza flew in and made a great save. In the 32nd minute, Vasco scored the third. And it was a stunning goal! With his first touch, Yuri, who hails from Volta Redonda, controlled the ball inside the box and struck beautifully with his right foot, giving the Red-Blacks a comfortable lead in the derby and the competition. Vasco even pulled one back in stoppage time with a goal from Tiago Reis.
