Flamengo's Silver Medals: Pedagogy in Off-Field Discipline
José Nogueira, a teacher at the base, explains how the department works

Continuing the series of reports on the red-and-black youth academy, it's now time for Pedagogy. This team's mission goes beyond simply monitoring academic performance and behavior. The goal is to observe and correct any developmental issues among young people, playing a fundamental role in youth soccer.
Educator José Nogueira is a key player in this phase of the boys' development. He coordinates a group that provides comprehensive support for the club's youth academy athletes, especially those living in the Jorge Helal Training Center in Vargem Grande, Rio de Janeiro.
Having been at Flamengo for two years, Nogueira manages all the players' schooling, tracking grades and activities, supervising extracurricular language courses, maintaining direct contact with all the athletes' schools, participating in the players' class council, and remaining close to parents and guardians. In addition to all these tasks, maintaining discipline in the dorms and promoting sociocultural activities are also part of his routine.
Mais Querido's professional staff has four monitors—Wilson Victor, Adalberto Pereira, André da Silva, and Jean Carlos—and performs two distinct tasks: with the players who reside on the club's premises and with those who don't. The monitors, aged between 30 and 55, work full-time with the resident players. There are currently 39 permanent players, in addition to the temporary players on probation. Wilson and Adalberto work the day shifts, and André and Jean work the night shifts.
On a day-to-day basis, they assist with managing the accommodation and also monitor the players' routines, including training, meal and class schedules, and monitoring the boys' personal hygiene.
As part of the training process, visiting fairs and museums is also part of the plan. Recently, Pedagogy took 25 athletes to the Book Biennial, in Rio Centro, near the George Helal Training Center. The next program will be at a museum
"The intention is that every month we can take the players to some project that makes some reference to their reality," says Nogueira.
