But it wasn't just the competition trophy that the boys won: Vinicius Junior and Lincoln dominated the Brazilian attack, being responsible for half of Brazil's goals in the competition. Brazilian hegemony
With the victory of the South American U-17 in Chile on Sunday (19), the Brazilian team lifted the competition trophy for the twelfth time. So far there have been 17 South American editions in this category, with the Canarinho winning the trophy in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015. With three victories, Argentina is the second biggest champion on the continent in this category.
The Brazilian Under-17 National Team's campaign
Brazil lifted the trophy after winning seven of its nine championship matches and drawing the other two—both against Paraguay, which proved to be the thorn in the side of the national team. The goal difference was impressive: 24 goals scored—12 by the Flamengo team—and only three conceded. In the nine matches, no Flamengo player found the net in only two—and in one of those, the starters were rested. A recap of the match by match:
Brazil 3 x 0 Peru
Brazil had a great debut against the Peruvians and counted on two goals from the red-blacks in the 3-0 victory. The team secured the victory in the first 45 minutes with Lincoln, Vinícius Jr. and Marcos Antônio.
Brazil 1 x 0 Venezuela
In the second round, Brazil had more difficulties against the Venezuelans, who had also debuted with a victory, but left the field with the victory, this time without a goal from the red-blacks, a rare occurrence in the competition.
Brazil 1 x 1 Paraguay
Against Paraguay, the Canarinho boys couldn't win, but the draw was enough for early qualification to the final hexagonal. The Brazilian goal was scored by Vinícius Junior, who had the skill to hit a beautiful lob shot.
Brazil 2 x 0 Argentina
With qualification for the final hexagonal assured, coach Carlos Amadeu gave a chance to the youngsters who hadn't yet played or had only come on late in the matches. Even so, the team defeated the Argentines, with goals from Yuri Alberto and Brenner. Meanwhile, the red-and-blacks, who were regular starters, were able to rest for the upcoming challenges.
Brazil 2 x 2 Paraguay
Paraguay was the only opponent Brazil failed to beat in the competition. Despite two goals from Brazil's red-and-black Lincoln in the first half, the Paraguayans managed to equalize in the final minutes of the match.
Brazil 4 x 0 Venezuela
Of course, in Brazil's rout, there was room for a goal from Vinicius Junior, who helped build the impressive score with Uno (own goal), Lucas Halter, and Yuri Alberto. The national team completely outclassed the Venezuelans, who didn't see the ball coming.
Brazil 3 x 0 Ecuador
In the victory over the Ecuadorians, it was all Flamengo on the field. In a match of strong collective play by Brazil, Vinicius Junior, twice, and Lincoln scored the winning goals, in a flawless performance by the Brazilian national team.
Brazil 3 x 0 Colombia
Brazil took the field against Colombia with their spot in the World Cup in India assured thanks to the other teams' results. Having achieved their first objective, the team sought and secured another crucial victory for the title. Brazil's top scorer, Vinícius Junior, scored the first two goals of the match, and Alerrandro sealed the deal.
Brazil 5 x 0 Chile
Brazil closed the competition with a flourish: undefeated, with a rout and the trophy. Lincoln scored in the 5-0 rout, accompanied by Paulinho and Alanzinho (3), at El Teniente Stadium in Rancagua. The team played captivating football and showed no mercy to the home side.
