Last Saturday (December 07.12th), Flamengo's under-12 team won the Metropolitan Championship, which is considered the state championship for the category. The title came at Vasco's home in Itaguaí, where the two teams tied 0-0 in regulation time and had to decide the fate of the trophy on penalty kicks. With more accurate aim, the Mais Querido won 4-3.
"It was really cool. The kids responded well to training and showed good progress during the championship. We started our journey with a 0-0 draw against Madureira, in Gávea, but then we grew and went on to win the title. We weren't the favorites and, in the end, we ended up surprising a lot of people," said Junior, the team's coach.
In addition to the trophy, Flamengo had two other individual achievements. With six goals, João Vitor finished the competition as the top scorer; and goalkeeper João was named the best goalkeeper in the Metropolitan Championship. In the final penalty shootout, he saved two of Vasco's penalties, becoming one of the heroes of the victory.
To win the title, Flamengo had to play 14 matches. Highlights included the two semifinal matches against Fluminense: in the first leg, a 1-0 victory at Gávea; and in the return, the red-and-blacks didn't feel the pressure of playing in Xerém, the Tricolor's home ground, winning 2-0, with goals from Alexandre Junior and Lucas.
