U-16s thrashes Nova Iguaçu and remains undefeated in the Guilherme Embry Tournament
Even playing away from home, Garotos do Ninho won 4-0 and are just one point away from the lead
By Ian Sena - inFlamengo's U-16 team, led by coach Ramon Lima, visited Nova Iguaçu on Wednesday morning (13) in a match valid for the fifth round of the Guilherme Embry Tournament, the State Championship of the category. Much better team, Rubro-Negro played calmly and decided the duel in the first half, when they opened 3-0. The final score of 4-0 (Samuel [2], Jean Carlos and Mayquinho) keeps the Garotos do Ninho undefeated in the defense of the competition title and in second place in the classification table with 14 points won, just one behind Botafogo. The Mais Querido returns to the field next Wednesday (20) at 9 am in Gávea, when they receive the third-placed Barra da Tijuca.
Flamengo created scoring chances from the opening seconds of the game and soon opened the scoring. Just five minutes in, Samuel made a great individual play down the right wing and crossed to Jean Carlos, who, well positioned inside the six-yard box, simply had to roll the ball into the back of the net. The second goal came in the 18th minute. Marcos Felipe appeared excellently supporting the red-and-black attack on the left flank and crossed perfectly for Samuel, who attempted two shots to extend the lead for the Mais Querido.
The red-and-blacks' superiority was immense, and the third goal came on the very next play. Lázaro delivered a sweet pass to Samuel, who crossed the ball and scored another. In the 31st minute, the Mais Querido attack formed a beautiful triangle, with Rykelmo, Marcos Felipe, and Mayquinho, who crossed into the box. Defender Renan Rodrigues attempted a clearance and nearly scored an own goal, but goalkeeper Breno was alert and made the save.
Just like in the first half, the Garotos do Ninho's goal soon followed in the second half. In the fourth minute, Mayquinho received the ball inside the box, shook off his marker, and shot into the corner, leaving Breno with no chance. It was the fourth goal for the red-and-blacks of the match. In the 33rd minute, Anderson fired a powerful shot, but it went over the bar. The final dangerous play of the match came in the 41st minute. After a rebound from the goalkeeper, Felipinho fired a beautiful lob from outside the box, but the defense cleared it off the line.
"We achieved an important victory despite playing away from home against an opponent that is always difficult to face. I'm happy to be able to score again, but even happier to play well and help my teammates to another victory. Now we'll prepare hard this week to return to our home game against Barra da Tijuca in the next round," said Samuel, a standout for the red-and-black team in the match.
