Flamengo's youth team performed well in this year's Copa Rio. Although they didn't qualify for the semifinals of the competition, which featured the best teams from across Brazil, the competition was crucial for the club's youth development, which, in addition to winning titles, strives to develop excellent professionals and athletes to further support the Red-Blacks.
In the quarterfinals of the Copa Rio, the "Mais Querido" (Most Wanted), despite playing well, ended up losing 2-1 to Atlético-PR and was eliminated from the competition. For coach Celso Martins, the red-and-black boys have improved significantly with the opportunity to face the best teams in Brazil.
"It was a very important competition, as the boys faced great teams. We're at the beginning of the year and our team still has a lot to improve. We qualified for the quarterfinals after beating Coritiba and ended up losing to Atlético-PR. I even think we were better during the game, but that's how knockouts are," said the coach.
Flamengo's next U-17 competition will be the Guanabara Cup. Flamengo will debut in the first round of the Carioca Championship on the 20th, against Nova Iguaçu.
