The U-17s are an example of the success of developing stars at Flamengo
Verticalized work carried out by youth football proves that the process is carried out correctly within the club
By Ian Sena - inHaving qualified for the Taça BH semifinals with a near-perfect campaign of four wins (Ponte Nova, Paraná, Grêmio and Novorizontino) and one draw (Vitória, and subsequent qualification in the penalty shootout), Flamengo's U-17 team remains firm in its pursuit of the competition title. On Monday afternoon (23), the team will face Palmeiras for a place in the final, with live broadcast on SporTV, at 16 pm.
With the primary goal of developing athletes and providing opportunities for all players on the roster to play and accelerate their development, the excellent work that has been successfully carried out by Mais Querido's youth teams for years continues to bear fruit and yield results. The club is primarily concerned with the development of its athletes, providing them with an ever-increasing amount of experience in competitions and travel, and meeting all demands, while maintaining the highest level and always competing for titles in every competition it competes in, whether state, national, or international.

Winner of the Guanabara Cup at the beginning of July after defeating Botafogo in the finalFlamengo's U-17 team illustrates this process well. Shortly after winning the first round of the State Championship, the Garotos do Ninho traveled to the Taça BH without five of their key players (Pedro Caraocci, Pablo, Wendel, Yuri, and Vitor Gabriel). These players remained in Rio de Janeiro and were integrated into a U-19 team that would compete in the important and traditional Durban Tournament in South Africa, which featured major European teams. Besides giving these athletes the opportunity to travel internationally, experience a new culture, and compete in a high-level international tournament playing in a category above their age group, the initiative gave five athletes born between 2000 and 2001 the opportunity to join the squad competing in the Taça BH and, in the same way, accelerate their maturation and development process as a whole.
"From a developmental perspective, the club chose to send some athletes who had just won the Guanabara U-17 Cup to the traditional Durban U-19 Tournament in South Africa, which featured some great teams. This has resulted in some positive outcomes. The main ones include providing five athletes born in 2000 and 2001 with the opportunity to compete in the BH Cup, a kind of Brazilian championship for the age group. This way, we prove once again that the club's main objective in its youth teams is the development of athletes and their daily development, combined with the appreciation of the competitive side inherent in the club's DNA," explained Kadu Borges, coordinator of Flamengo's youth teams.
This week, with the BH Cup already underway, the Durban Tournament was canceled by the organizers. Despite playing without five of the category's top players, the U-17 team continues its excellent campaign in the competition and is undefeated in the semifinals. The results on the field, combined with the integrated work done off it, prove that the training process is being carried out correctly and that, as its DNA dictates, "Flamengo makes great players at home."
