U-20 is in the semifinals of the Guanabara Cup

Under heavy rain, Garotos do Ninho draw 1-1 with Volta Redonda and secure qualification for the next phase

In a balanced match heavily affected by the heavy rains that have been falling in Rio de Janeiro since last Thursday, Flamengo's Under-20 team drew 1-1 (Vitor Gabriel) with Volta Redonda on the heavy pitch at Gávea, in a single-leg match valid for the quarterfinals of the Taça Guanabara. Because they had a better record than the team from the South Fluminense region in the qualifying phase, they secured a place in the semifinals of the first round of the State Championship in their category. Their opponent, also in a single-leg match, will be the winner of the match between Botafogo and Nova Iguaçu, who face each other on Saturday morning.

Even with the advantage of a draw, Flamengo pressed forward. At six minutes, Marx Lenin's shot was blocked by the defense. From the resulting corner, Vitor Gabriel, returning to the attack for the U-20 team and making his debut in the State Championship, headed the ball in to open the scoring for the Flamengo youth team. The rain was heavy at the Gávea Stadium, but Flamengo maintained the pressure in attack. At 19 minutes, Wendel unleashed a powerful shot that grazed the right post of goalkeeper Luiz. In the following minute, Marx Lenin tried his luck from outside the area; the ball bounced and forced Luiz to make a great save, deflecting it for a corner. From Bill's corner, Vitor Gabriel rose unmarked, but his header went over the crossbar.

At 28 minutes, after a good offensive play in which the ball passed from foot to foot, Luiz Henrique unleashed a powerful shot from outside the area, posing a threat to the Volta Redonda goal. The field became heavier with each passing minute, making offensive actions difficult for both teams. Even so, Flamengo almost extended their lead at 40 minutes when Wendel struck a beautiful shot that hit Luiz's post.

Three minutes into the second half, Volta Redonda equalized in an unassuming play. After a long kick from VT, the ball bounced on the wet pitch and deceived goalkeeper Yago Darub, who misjudged the timing and watched it end up in the back of the net. At 18 minutes, Vitor Ricardo made a beautiful cross and Wendel shot first-time, forcing a great save from Luiz. The defense then cleared the danger. The Flamengo youth team pressed for a second goal. At 22 minutes, Marx Lenin took a free kick and Luiz made another great save. After that, Flamengo managed the result well, which qualified them for the Taça Guanabara semi-finals.

Flamengo: Yago Darub, Matheus França, Natan, Lucas Freitas, Pablo (Ítalo); Vinicius Souza, Luiz Henrique (Henrique); Marx Lenin (Gomes); Bill (Vitor Ricardo), Wendel and Vitor Gabriel. Coach: Mauricio Souza.
