Current Copinha champion and Taça Rio leader, Flamengo's under-20 soccer team debuts this Wednesday (18), in the Brazilian Junior Championship, against Internacional. The match will be at Gávea Stadium, at 15 pm. In the same group as Sport, Palmeiras, Inter and Ponte Preta, the juniors need to qualify among the top two in the group to advance to the second phase.
"The Brazilian Under-20 Championship is in its second edition and is a competition that's here to stay. It will be a very difficult debut against Inter, which has an excellent junior team. They are very well trained and well-trained. The first stage is a very short stage, with only four games to qualify. And at home, we have to start with a win to get off to a good start," said coach Zé Ricardo, whose team was rebuilt in January, after the São Paulo Cup, to compete simultaneously in the national and state championships.
In the four first phase matches, there will be two home games and two away games.
"After the São Paulo Cup, this is the most important competition in the category. After winning the title, we worked hard at the beginning of the Carioca. We didn't win the Guanabara Cup, but we made it to the semifinals. We're working hard, and we're now top of the Rio Cup. Our focus now is Wednesday's debut against Inter. It will be a very important match; we have to get the three points at home," said team captain Matheus Sávio.
In 2016, the competition rules changed: the top two teams from each group advanced from the second round to the semifinals. In 2015, only one team from each group advanced, going directly to the final.
