The U-20s beat Internacional once again and are now in the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil.
Even playing in the South, Garotos do Ninho repeat the victory achieved in Rio and will face Cruzeiro for a place in another final.
By Ian Sena - inThe semifinals are here! Playing at Morada dos Quero-Queros Stadium in Alvorada, Porto Alegre, Flamengo's U-20 team defeated Internacional again, this time 2-1 (Rodrigo Muniz and Bill), and comfortably and confidently advanced to the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil in that category. The top scorer, Rodrigo Muniz, scored once again, scoring his eighth goal of the competition. In the next round, Flamengo will face Cruzeiro for a spot in the tournament's grand final. The home-field ties will be determined in a draw to be held tonight at the CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
Flamengo wasn't intimidated by the game inside their opponent's training center and created their first scoring chance. In the eighth minute, Yuri broke free from his marker and passed to Bill. The skilful striker raced past the defense, got past two defenders, and struck hard, but wide of the net. In the 13th minute, Yuri received the ball on the left wing, charged at his marker, and was fouled hard almost on the edge of the penalty area. Defender Bruno Fuchs then intentionally kicked the ball at the Flamengo striker, who had to be substituted. The referee only issued a yellow card.
Internacional threatened on the next play. Leandro Cordova took a shot, but Marx Lenin was there to head it off the line. The match was played under intense pressure in Alvorada. In the 25th minute, Jhonny hit a cross that was well saved by Hugo Souza. Flamengo returned to the attack in the 28th minute, with a dangerous shot from Rodrigo Muniz going over the bar. The match was very even.
Internacional took the lead in the 35th minute, with a cross-shot saved by a well-positioned Hugo Souza. In the 39th minute, Matheus França crossed, and Rodrigo Muniz headed it into the hands of goalkeeper Lucas. The Boys from the Nest nearly opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, when Bill crossed and the defense nearly scored an own goal. After that, there was no way out. Matheus França crossed to Rodrigo Muniz's head. Undeterred, the Copa do Brasil and Flamengo's top scorer of the season rose beautifully and scored his 12th goal of the year and eighth in the competition, opening the scoring for the Mais Querido, which further extended its already comfortable lead in the match. In the last play before halftime, Richard shot into the top corner. Hugo Souza flew beautifully and made a spectacular save, palming it out for a corner.
The Nest Boys didn't want to give danger a chance, and early in the second half, they killed the game—and the duel. Six minutes in, Vitor Ricardo got to the bottom of the pitch and crossed perfectly for Bill. On his first chance, he took a one-on-one shot with the goalkeeper, and the ball rolled gently until it hit the base of the post. Alert to the play, Bill himself anticipated the rebound and tapped it into an open goal, scoring Mais Querido's second goal of the game.
Internacional fought until the end, trying to at least narrow the gap. In the 32nd minute, Leandro Cordova struck a powerful shot from outside the box. Hugo Souza, well-positioned, made the save without rebounding. In the 37th minute, Peglow fired a shot over the red-and-black goal. In the 40th minute, it was José Gabriel's turn to unleash a bomb, which was saved by Hugo Souza. Following the play, Christopher made a saving tackle, preventing the Gaucho team's consolation goal in the match, which came in stoppage time, with a beautiful goal by Leandro Cordova.
