This Saturday (July 20.07), the under-20 team completes a month of pre-season. Among the training matches held, the one that drew the most attention was the one played against Mano Menezes' reserves, last Thursday (July 18.07). The activity, divided into two 40-minute halves, ended with a 2-0 victory for the juniors. More than the result, the way the team played pleased coach Cleber dos Santos a lot.
"The training match was very good. The team has improved significantly within our game plan, especially in terms of defensive organization. We played tightly, which was very positive, especially with the two goals scored in the first 40 minutes by forwards Igor Sartori, Fernandinho, and Romário (scorer of the goals), who were the main attacking players. On defense, Fernando has also improved significantly; he's the team captain and led the team with positive leadership," explained the U-20 coach.
The highly praised Fernando has been with Flamengo for ten years. In 2003, he joined the club to play futsal, and two years later, he moved to the field. His last title with the youth team was the 2013 Rio Cup, under Cleber dos Santos.
"Cleber dos Santos always asks me to pull the group together and get everyone involved. Yesterday, we played against the professionals who didn't face ASA-AL, and it was great. We played well and we'll try to keep it up. After the practice match, Cleber came to talk to me and praise me. I try to pass on to the group what he asks of me. We trust each other, and I hope everything continues to go well," said Fernando.
The next training match will be against Teresópolis on Monday (July 22.07) at Ninho do Urubu. Then, on Saturday (July 27.07), Cleber dos Santos' team will play the first friendly of the preseason against Tigres, at the opponent's home. The season will begin in August, when Flamengo will compete for the Taça BH.
