Flamengo/Marinha faces Ponte Preta in the Brazilian Women's Championship
Rubro-negros have the best campaign of the competition so far
By Mariana Sa - inThe best defense and second most efficient attack in the Brazilian Women's Football Championship, Flamengo/Marinha will have another challenge this Saturday (20), at 15 pm. Against Ponte Preta at the Manuel Ferreira Stadium, in Balsamo (SP), the Meninas da Gávea are looking for their fifth consecutive victory to maintain their unbeaten run in the competition.
In the last round, Rubro-Negro beat Audax 1-0, with a goal from Raíza, playing at Gávea. The Mais Querido currently leads the table with 12 points and four wins in four matches.
Flamengo x Ponte Preta
Flamengo and Ponte Preta have faced each other four times in the history of the Brazilian Women's Championship. Back in the 2017 group stage, the teams faced each other once in Rio de Janeiro and once in Campinas. In the first round, the Meninas da Gávea put on a show in Gávea, defeating the Alvinegro 3-0, with goals from Pâmela, Larissa, and Jane. In the second leg, Flamengo went to Moisés Lucarelli and was ultimately defeated. Ponte Preta managed to open the scoring and extend their lead, but Raquel scored to reduce the deficit. However, the Rubro-Negro conceded another goal and lost 3-1.
In the first half of 2018, Mengo put on a strong collective performance at Gávea Stadium, winning 1-0 with a stunning free kick from Bárbara. In the second leg, they lost 2-1 at Nelo Bracalente Stadium in Vinhedo, São Paulo. Dany Helena scored the goal.

Ponte Preta hasn't gotten off to a good start in the Brasileirão. In four matches, they've drawn two and lost two, earning just two points. Currently in 14th place, the São Paulo team drew 1-1 against São Francisco-BA in the last round.

Flamengo/Marinha in the Brazilian Championship
This will be Flamengo/Marinha's fifth appearance in the Brasileirão. Playing nationally since 2015, the red-and-black team won the title in 2016 and competed vigorously for the title in every edition. Last year, the team reached the semifinals. It's worth noting that Flamengo finished last year with the Campeonato Carioca title, its fourth since the partnership began.
Dispute system
Starting this season, the competition format will be different from previous years. This time, all 16 teams will face each other in a single round, alternating between home and away matches. The top eight teams advance to the quarterfinals and so on until the final. In the knockout stage, all matches will be home and away.
Having been one of the top eight teams last season, the regulations state that Flamengo will play eight matches at home and seven away.
In a Women's World Cup year, the competition is scheduled to take a break between rounds nine and ten. Therefore, the Meninas da Gávea will play at the end of May and return only in July.
In addition to Flamengo, the participating teams are: Foz Cataratas/Athlético-PR, Ponte Preta, Kindermann/Avaí, Iranduba, Ferroviária, Audax-SP, Rio Preto, Santos, São Francisco-BA, São José-SP, Corinthians, Sport Recife, Vitória de Santo Antão-PE, Vitória-BA and Minas ICESP-DF.
