Flamengo's policy of valuing its youth academy gained momentum in the final stretch of this year and is also considered fundamental for the future. Investing in players developed at the club is one way to build winning generations. And Flamengo fans know this. Therefore, the expectation is that 2011 will be a year of affirmation for the young talents that are emerging.
One of them is defender Welinton. At 21 years old, he got his first chance in 2007, and after some ups and downs, he finished 2010 as a starter for the Flamengo team, with the confidence of coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, his teammates, and the fans. For 2011, the expectation could be nothing other than maintaining these good performances.
"I hope to have a great preseason, continue being a starter, and I aim for great achievements next season. We grow in life, learning from a young age, from a young age. Everyone here knows the pressure. We have to face it head-on, whatever comes. I've been coming on regularly since last year, earning my place, and I'm very happy about that. I want to help Flamengo and achieve many more things here," he said.
Forward Diego Maurício is another player who dreams of remaining one of Vanderlei's main options. Having received special attention from the coach on several occasions, the number 49 sees 2011 as a crucial year for his career. With his contract renewed until 2015, he hopes to establish himself and help the team win new titles next season.
"We have to work hard to put Flamengo where it deserves to be; fighting for titles. I don't even have words to describe coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo. He's a winning coach who gives us a lot of confidence. I'm sure we'll have a strong, united group to fight for all the competitions we'll be playing in," he concluded.
Flamengo's youth teams also have an important commitment at the start of 2011. With a group whose pillars are the players who were state champions in the under-17 category in 2010, undefeated, the Rubro-negro will compete in the São Paulo Junior Cup.
