Itu (SP) – Flamengo's roster is packed with youth academy products, but one generation in particular has plenty to celebrate. The 2007 state youth champion, who has won numerous other titles, including the Macaé Cup, considered the Brazilian Championship for the category, has no fewer than nine representatives in the Rubro-Negro's professional squad, based in Itu.
Trained by Rogério Lourenço at the base, goalkeeper Diego, defenders Welinton and Fabrício, full-backs Jorbison and Galhardo, midfielder Lenon, midfielders Saba and Camacho, and striker Diego Maurício make up the group, which is highly praised by the red-black commander.
"That period was really cool for everyone who was part of that group. I was able to witness the growth and development of these boys, and I'm really happy to have them in the professional ranks now, in such a short time. It was an important campaign, not just for the title, because at the youth level, this is precisely a consequence of the players' growth and development. They showed that they're in good shape. They won regional and national titles, and it's a generation with great potential," recalled Rogério.
The coach is banking on Flamengo's tradition of consistently producing great players and believes that, with proper training, these players can thrive in the professional ranks. Just like many others.
"Flamengo has always been a club that has developed players. In every major achievement of ours, the youth academy has been valued. The other day I even read an article about the clubs that released the most players from their youth academy to the national team at the World Cup, and Flamengo was the clear winner in this statistic, which proves the importance of good work at the youth academy," said the coach, who emphasized the importance of investing in the youth academy.
"There's also the financial side, because these are the players who come up through the ranks at the club and, when valued, can be negotiated and provide a return. There's also the issue of the field itself, because the player has a strong identification with the club, he's already used to the pressure, and that makes a big difference," he added.
