The moment of truth has arrived. We're just waiting for the ball to roll. Today, at the Maracanã, at 21:45 PM, Flamengo will play Independiente of Argentina in the final Copa Sudamericana final of the year. Argentina holds the advantage on aggregate, but a packed Maracanã will be cheering for Flamengo. The first leg ended 1-2 for them. There is no away goals rule. A Flamengo victory by one goal will take the game to extra time.

Confidence in winning the title is absolute. It would be Flamengo's first continental trophy at the Maracanã, and precisely against the opponent that prevented them from winning it in 1995. Star player Everton Ribeiro is playing his first final in the Flamengo jersey and knows the magnitude of a final playing for Flamengo, counting on the fans to help him leave the stadium with the title.
"Optimism is very high. Especially because we were superior for part of the game, away from home. Now we're playing at home, with our fans. In a final, there are no lost balls, no fatigue. We're going all out to reverse this situation," said the number seven in the press conference after Monday's training session. Everton also gave his opinion on how Independiente will play in the decisive match.
"We know they're going to try to slow the game down, so we can't fall into their trap. We're going to press and play our game. We can't give them space because they're a team that has quality on the counter-attack," he explained.
The campaign
This is the last game of a gigantic season for Flamengo. They played 83 games (including friendlies), the most games played by a team this year. They competed in six possible competitions on the Brazilian calendar, reaching the final of three (State Championship, Copa do Brasil and Copa Sudamericana, in addition to playing in the Libertadores, the Brazilian Championship and the Primeira Liga).
In the Copa Sudamericana, they debuted against Palestino in Chile, immediately winning 5-2. In the return leg in Rio, another resounding victory, 5-0, secured their place in the next round. In the following phase, they faced Chapecoense, starting with a draw in Santa Catarina (0-0) and a resounding win in Rio (4-0). The classic match against Fluminense marked the quarter-finals. In the first leg, Everton scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory. In the return leg, a 3-3 draw qualified Flamengo. And in the semi-final, Junior Barranquilla of Colombia was defeated twice (2-1 and 2-0) to guarantee Flamengo's place in the final.
Felipe Vizeu, with five goals, is Flamengo's top scorer in the competition and also the leading scorer in this edition of the Copa Sudamericana, tied with Luis Rodríguez of Atlético Tucuman and Jhon Cifuentes of Universidad de Quito. The last time Flamengo was top scorer in South American competitions was Romário, in the 1999 Mercosur Cup, with eight goals.
