A championship, especially a points-based league, isn't won with just one team, but with a squad. This maxim has been popular ever since the Brazilian Championship began using this format, and it's precisely the mindset of Flamengo coach Silas for the final 13 rounds of the 2010 edition.
The red-and-black team's path to returning to the top positions isn't easy, but Silas is confident that, at this crucial moment, the consistency of the squad he leads can be a game-changer. Citing Willians as an example, he reminds us that no player is irreplaceable, especially given the quality of potential replacements.
"Williams is an excellent player, he should be called up by Mano for the national team, but Flamengo is a group and, at this decisive moment, the strength of the group is what has to shine. We will win with the 11 that start plus the three that will come on," he said.
The coach also took the opportunity to explain the substitutions he made during Wednesday's game (22.09), against Grêmio, and highlight the desire of midfielder Renato, who once again played for the full 90 minutes.
"Pet came on and scored the goal, Renato played the full 90 minutes, Correa played well on the left side... Sometimes the planning works and sometimes it doesn't. At the start of the second half, it didn't work out so well, when I brought on Jean and Maldonado for Angelim and Kleberson, who asked to come off, but Pet's introduction was good and we managed to equalize," he concluded.
Silas and the Flamengo coaching staff will lead a training session this Thursday afternoon (23.09), at 15 pm, in Gávea. It will be the first training session before the match on Saturday (25.09), at 18:30 pm, against Palmeiras, at Engenhão.
