The 2009 defeat is used as motivation for the red-blacks to beat Avaí, in Florianópolis

Flamengo's sixth Brazilian championship campaign in 2009 was not all about happiness. There were moments of great difficulty along the way. And one of the negative, but unforgettable, chapters that served as a milestone in that season was the 3-0 defeat to Avaí at Ressacada. The team from Gávea was unable to play its best football and lacked the strength to beat its opponent this Sunday (10.10), at 16 pm, on that occasion.
Now, in a very different situation, the red-and-blacks want a result that's the complete opposite of what happened last year. Flamengo isn't fighting for the title – it wants a spot in the South American, while Avaí isn't fighting for the top four – it's a direct rival of Flamengo in the fight to escape the bottom of the table. And goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba warns that the red-and-blacks' stance in the upcoming game will also be different.
"It's another big game. We know how strong Avaí is, especially at Ressacada. Last year's game proves that. Flamengo had a lot of difficulties there, and we know we need to put in a great performance to come back with the win. We have a lot of respect for Avaí, which is strong, but we're going into this match with a lot of desire. We have to be patient, but we know it's a crucial game for Flamengo in the championship. They're a direct opponent in the fight to escape the relegation zone, and we have to be able to score points in this match," he said.
Defender David agrees and already knows where the team can improve. According to him, Avaí's attack, which is skillful and fast, cannot be given any openings. For the defender, Flamengo must go for the win, of course, but with a lot of patience and calm, so as not to open up too much and end up suffering from counterattacks.
"We need to be very careful to play well there. I didn't play last year, but I remember that match well. We can't go in exposed. Avaí is a very well-prepared team, and we need to be patient and intelligent to come out with the win. They always come out with speed, on the counterattack, so we have to go for the win, attack, but we can't do it desperately, trying to resolve the game quickly," he noted.
With 33 points, Flamengo will climb at least one position if they win. They are currently in 14th place, and on Sunday, Ceará and Guarani, in 12th and 13th place with 35 and 34 points, respectively, will face each other at Castelão. For this difficult match, Flamengo should field Marcelo Lomba, Leonardo Moura, David, Welinton, and Juan; Correa, Willians, Kleberson, and Renato; Diego Maurício and Val Baiano.
