Young Guilherme's time
After the first training session, the first trip, and now the first chance as a starter for Flamengo.
By From the official website team - inWhen coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo lined up the Flamengo teams in Saturday's (November 06.11th) tactical training session at the Raulino de Oliveira Stadium in Volta Redonda, a surprise caught everyone off guard. Young Guilherme, 18, recently promoted from the youth team, earned a spot in the starting lineup. Another chapter in the player's rapid rise within the Flamengo squad.
After his first training session under Vanderlei's command last week, and immediately focusing on the game against Corinthians, Guilherme made his first trip midweek for the match against Ceará, and now he could start against Atlético-PR.
"I never imagined it would happen so fast. It's a dream come true. Until recently, I watched them on television, now I'm on the field, alongside them. I'm ready for this challenge, coach Luxemburgo gave me a chance and I hope to live up to expectations and I'm here to contribute to the team," said the player, who recalled his childhood during his first professional press conference.
"They saw me playing with a tin can and told me that if I could repeat with the ball what I was doing with the can, I could become a good player. I was invited to play futsal at Jacarepagua Tennis Club and then at Jequiá, on the island. There, a friend of Marcio Braga (former president) saw me and invited me to Flamengo," he noted.
The player also explained to the Flamengo fans, who hadn't followed him in the youth categories, how he likes to play.
"My strength is to accelerate, attack, and cross well," he added.
