Fernando's new opportunity

Midfielder expected to start in Sunday's match against Corinthians

Whether as the first midfielder or as a second, scoring or helping out more in the creation, defensive midfielder Fernando really wants to show his worth to coach Rogério Lourenço and the fans. In training last week, the player was highly praised by the coaching staff, so much so that he even entered the field during the derby against Vasco, and now, with Correa suspended, he could start in Sunday's match (08.08) against Corinthians, at Pacaembu.

In Rogério's first tactical training session before the match, Fernando was named in the starting lineup. A good start to another week in which he promises to give his all to earn a chance to start.

"I had a really good week before the derby against Vasco, and now this opportunity has come along. If coach Rogério does pick me as a starter, I'll dedicate myself to making the most of it. It's actually easier to start a game than to start in the second half, for example, because you get used to the rhythm of the game early on. When you come on mid-match, it's hard to find the right rhythm," he explained.

With Fernando's lineup, Flamengo would have an attacking midfield for the match, consisting of him, Willians, Kleberson, and Petkovic. A "bold" team, according to the number 17, who approves of the strategy.

"It's a game plan that's been used a lot and that I really like. We play with three quality midfielders, who also know how to get out there, and a creative man. I believe we can't stay defensive just because we're playing away from home. I'm going with this bold approach that we beat Palmeiras away from home," said the player, who also analyzed his differences and similarities in relation to Correa.

"I think I'm a stronger guy who can get in from behind to finish. We're two defensive midfielders who aren't the typical first man, as we come out well in the game. I believe I can be a good substitute. If Rogério starts me more firmly, I'll stay; if he gives me more freedom, I'll go. I'll try to help the team in the best way possible," he concluded.

At 23 years old, Fernando Gomes de Jesus arrived at Gávea at the beginning of the year after two good seasons at Goiás, and has already played 18 games wearing the red-black shirt, having scored three goals and provided one assist.
