The safety of a young defender

Calm, Welinton celebrates his performance against Botafogo and thinks about a future start

It may not seem like it, but young Welinton, just 21 years old, is already a very experienced defender. Having played several times for the Brazilian youth teams and having been promoted to the Flamengo senior squad last year, the defender is already heading into his 40th game for the red-and-black team (he's 37). He performed well against Botafogo and hopes to repeat that success against Atlético-GO on Sunday (July 18.07), if selected by Rogério Lourenço.

Happy with the fact that he played in the classic last Wednesday (14.07) and that the team did not concede any goals, Welinton believes that, with a sequence of games, he has everything to evolve even more.

"It was very important. It was an opportunity that Professor Rogério gave me and, thank God, we came away with a positive result, without conceding any goals, which was important for us in the table. A sequence of games helps you to improve even more. I'm there. Regardless of who plays, Flamengo will certainly be well represented," said the defender.

A product of the youth academy, Welinton doesn't hide his satisfaction at having several of his teammates promoted to the professional ranks. Happy with the success of Marcelo Lomba and Paulo Sérgio, for example, he hopes to continue the motto that "Flamengo makes stars at home."

"We were practically raised together at Flamengo and that's what everyone wanted: to reach the professional level and be well regarded by everyone. I hope we can continue helping and achieving good results for the club," he added.
