The first half went as expected. Needing a result, the home team pressed Flamengo on their own half, but with little objectivity.

Junior's first good chance came in the fifth minute, with Mier's low shot drawing a superb save from César. After that, it was 30 minutes of aimless passing and random shots in midfield, against a Flamengo side that was confident in recovering possession. Junior came close again in the 35th minute, with Chará running down the right and shooting close to the red-and-black goal. 

Flamengo responded in the 39th minute. Paquetá received the ball on the left and crossed low to Vizeu. The striker touched the ball, but goalkeeper Sebastian Vieira performed a miracle. Two minutes later, Arão took a long-range shot, but Vieira saved it again. The Colombians attacked with shots and more shots from all over the field, without posing much threat to César. And so the first half ended, with Flamengo 45 minutes away from qualifying. 

The second half started as the team wanted. In the sixth minute, Trauco found Vizeu, who shifted into fifth gear and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring. The stadium and Junior felt the blow. Flamengo gained momentum. The "Mais Querido" (The Most Beloved) played and held off the Colombian attack. 

César worked hard. He felt his leg hurt, but he kept going. He made the save. Rueda made some changes. He took off the exhausted Everton Ribeiro and Lucas Paquetá and brought on Márcio Araújo and Rodinei.
