He just wanted to be happy. And, along the way, he made the Nation happy too. Adriano Leite Ribeiro, the Emperor, turns 34 this Wednesday (17).

The striker began his career at Flamengo and, at 19, was already one of Brazil's brightest prospects, showing great potential. He was sold early on to Inter Milan in Italy. After loan spells with other Italian teams, he established himself with the Milanese team and showed the world who he was.

His stunning goals, his sprints, and his renowned left-footed power earned him the nickname "Imperatore"—The Emperor. In 2004, his first year as a starter for Inter, he participated in the Copa América with the Brazilian national team and had one of the most memorable moments of his career. With 20 seconds remaining in the second half of the final, Argentina was leading 2-1. Adriano took advantage of a pass into the box, spun, dribbled past two defenders, and unleashed a powerful shot into the corner to equalize. Brazil won in penalties.

Five years later, facing personal problems, injuries, and fitness challenges, he made a decision: to return to the place where he was happiest. So, in May 2009, he signed a contract with Flamengo.

His return came later that month, when he scored the winning goal against Atlético Paranaense in front of a packed Maracanã stadium, eager to see him again. Adriano showed that his technique was still intact and, swayed by a crowd happily chanting "The Emperor has returned," he was one of the most important players in the team's sixth Brazilian championship.
