Midfielder Renato waited dejectedly for the results of the round on the steps of the Raulino de Oliveira locker room. Upon being informed that there was no longer any chance of Flamengo being relegated in the 2010 Brazilian Championship, the player appeared relieved, but not at all happy.
Aware that they need to show much more to please the demanding Flamengo fans, Renato hopes that in 2011 the work will be done with more tranquility. And even though they haven't been in the relegation zone for a single round, he hopes that the 2010 season will serve as a lesson.
"We lost and we're sad. That's normal. We played on equal terms with a team that's fighting for the title, but it didn't work out. Cruzeiro has an excellent team and ended up winning. Fortunately, the other results helped us. We're happy that everything worked out, but we can't forget the mistakes of this year. Everything has to serve as a lesson. We need to do everything right next year, from the beginning of training, so we don't suffer at the end," analyzed Renato Abreu.
Flamengo will face Santos in the final round of the Brazilian Championship. The match, which may not seem to matter much, could secure Flamengo's place in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana, a focus for the team since coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo took over.
