Angelim thanks the group for their commitment to marking

"It's a collective effort. If it were just me and Welinton back there, we'd concede 200 goals per game."

As always humble and good-natured, defender Ronaldo Angelim thanked his teammates for their dedication to defending in recent Brazilian Championship matches. Revealing a conversation between the squad and the coaching staff, which established the philosophy of first focusing on avoiding goals and then trying to score them, Angelim explained why Flamengo, for the first time this season, managed to go two games without conceding.

According to him, the team's marking ability and the awareness that everyone needs to help prevent Marcelo Lomba from having to work too hard in goal is the main factor behind the defense's good record in its return to the Brasileirão after the World Cup.

"It's a collective effort. If it were just me and Welinton back there, we'd be conceding 200 goals per game. The whole team is helping. We talked a lot and set this goal. We have to focus on our defense first and then on the attack. It's been working," he said.

The defender believes the team is on the right track, but foresees difficulties in the next two games, against Avaí and Internacional, two other teams that have returned very well to the Brazilian Championship.

"They're two tough teams to face, but there are no easy games in this championship. We'll keep working, defending our goal and hoping that the guys can solve it up front," said Angelim, who also heaped praise on goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba.

"Lomba deserves all of this. His numbers speak for themselves. He has our complete confidence. He works hard and deserves the chance he's getting," he added.
