For the next two weeks, coach Andrade will be without defender Alvaro. The number 3 suffered a left knee sprain in the match against Botafogo last Sunday and is out for the games against Tigres, América, and Friburguense. Therefore, the club's manager will have to choose a new starter to form the central defense with Fabrício.
Ronaldo Angelim and David are the candidates for this position. The former was a starter until the beginning of the year, and in 2009, he became known for scoring the goal that gave Flamengo its sixth Brazilian championship. The more experienced defender came on in the second half of the match against Botafogo and says he's ready to return to the first team if necessary.
"I'm confident because I think I've performed well in the last two games. I'm training hard, performing well, and I'm always available. When Andrade needs me, I'll always be here. I know I have his trust, and that's crucial," he said.
David also scored in the 2-1 victory over Grêmio, on that unforgettable December 6th last year, and is another player who is looking forward to returning to the starting lineup.
"I hope to make the most of this opportunity. I'll do everything I can to help the team play another good game. I have a good rapport with Fabrício; we train a lot together as reserves, and I hope I can do well if the coach chooses me," he said.
Starter Fabrício, for his part, doesn't see much difference in playing with one or the other. He assures that he can play well alongside Ronaldo Angelim, even though they're both left-handed, and also with David, despite the duo's youth.
"There's not much difference. They're two very high-quality players, and the chemistry between them is good. Angelim and I proved against Botafogo that there's no problem playing with two left-handed players, and regardless of who plays, we just have to focus on closing the kitchen back there," he observed.
Flamengo and Tigres face off this Wednesday at 19:30 p.m. at the Engenhão stadium. Flamengo leads Group A of the Rio Cup with 13 points.
