Birthday boy Lomba hopes for a year of achievements in 2011.
Flamengo's goalkeeper assessed the past season and expressed optimism for the future at the club.

When he was a child, Marcelo Lomba must have had problems because his birthday was a week before Christmas. Nowadays, however, the Flamengo goalkeeper has nothing to complain about. After all, he doesn't have to go through the traditional and painful gauntlet of obstacles, nor be covered in eggs and flour, as happens to athletes on the day they turn another year older.
This Saturday (December 18.12th), Lomba will celebrate his 24th birthday. After 30 games as a starter in the 2010 Brazilian Championship, his celebration will be very different from last year, when he was a reserve and didn't dream that so many changes could happen in such a short time.
"My birthday is during the holidays, at the end of the year. I want to thank God for the past year, for the perfect health, as I didn't get injured. I had the opportunity to play as a starter and played in 30 games in the championship," says the goalkeeper, who suddenly had to take on the most complicated position in football.
"Of course, I went through a difficult situation, replacing Bruno, but it served as a great experience and learning opportunity for me. Personally, I believe it was a great year, even though Flamengo didn't compete for any titles. And, in addition, it will be important to give me experience for 2011."
The joy of winning the Brazilian championship for the sixth time in 2009 didn't continue this year, but Lomba has known the Flamengo tradition since his youth days, a tradition synonymous with many achievements. And this experience gives him the certainty of returning to the championship trophy celebrations soon.
"Next year, I hope Flamengo will put together a great team and win titles again, something that didn't happen in 2010. That's my goal, and I believe it's Flamengo's goal too. May 2011 be a happy year," he plans.
His seriousness points to early maturity. Approaching his 24th birthday, Lomba is a focused individual, and his behavior demonstrates concern for the future. Strong family ties mean the young athlete always wants to be close to his parents, siblings, and all his relatives.
"I'm very attached to my family. I still don't know if I'll spend my birthday in Rio or if I'll travel to relax, but I want it to be very lively," he said, shortly before going on vacation.
"When I was a child, I used to complain about having my birthday so close to Christmas because I often only received one present. Then came the good side, of not having to go through the gauntlet that players are forced to go through on their birthdays, as well as escaping the egging."
