Besides Wonder Wire, Flamengo received another illustrious and well-known visitor at Gávea on Friday afternoon (06.08). Left-back Athirson, who was successful at the club in the early 2000s and who currently plays for Portuguesa, met up with old friends as part of a treatment he underwent at the Medical Department.
Although his last stint with the club was in 2004, the full-back remains an idol to many Flamengo fans and had to sign autographs and take many photos with fans present at training. Delighted with the recognition, he reaffirmed his love for Flamengo and expressed his satisfaction at being back in the place where he first emerged as a footballer.
"It's great to come back here. I always get emotional because I remember what I did for this club and how important Flamengo is to me. I can't explain the love I feel for this club. Portuguesa released me, so I came here to get treatment and also see my friends," he said.
Now 33 years old, the player doesn't hide his desire to return to Flamengo before ending his career.
"It's a big dream to return to Flamengo. To this day, I'm still very well-known among the fans; many Flamengo fans stop me on the street and ask me to come back, and of course I'd like to end my career here. It's a dream I have, and we'll see if it can come true one day," he added.
The full-back, in the eight years he wore the red-black shirt, won two State Championships (1999 and 2000), a South American Gold Cup (1996), a Brazilian Club World Champions Cup (1997) and a Mercosul Cup (1999).
