A 1987 Brazilian champion with Flamengo, Bebeto said he understood goalkeeper Bruno's interview last Monday, when the captain stated that the team may have sensed the fans' anxiety moments after São Paulo – one of the title contenders – stumbled. "I understand that anxiety. On Sunday, I even felt like going on the field. But you have to know how to control it and be patient," Bebeto said.
Accompanied by his wife, Denise, Bebeto said he was very happy with the team's performance in the Brazilian Championship. He remains hopeful of winning the sixth title. "If Goiás plays even half as well as they did against Flamengo, São Paulo will stumble. The title race is wide open."
Bebeto's charisma remains high. Upon entering the bookstore where three books about Flamengo were being launched on Tuesday night in Rio, the former player was surrounded by fans. "[Journalist Carlos Eduardo] Mansur asked me for a testimonial, and it was very easy for me. Flamengo is part of my life and my family. I did it with great care and love," said the striker.
One of the heroes of the Brazilian national team's fourth World Cup win in 1994, Bebeto was born and raised at Flamengo, where he won the 1986 State Championship and the 1987 Brazilian Championship. In the late 80s, he signed a contract with Vasco da Gama and played for the rival club for three years. He then moved on to La Coruña and, among other clubs, had further stints with Flamengo and Botafogo.
