Biogenetika collects DNA from Flamengo players
A pioneering partnership in Brazilian football will allow Rubro-Negro to individualize training and help prevent injuries throughout the season.

The Biogenetika laboratory collected the DNA of Flamengo players this Thursday morning (January 07.01th). The test, performed at the club's headquarters in Gávea, will create a genetic profile for each athlete and help the club's coaching staff develop specific, individual training plans for the squad, which will travel this afternoon to Mangaratiba, on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro, for preseason training. The initiative, a pioneering initiative in Brazilian football, was initiated by Márcio Tannure, head of the Rio de Janeiro club's medical department.
"This is part of a new sports training methodology in football, in which we believe. Our goal is to implement individualized training, where we can get the best out of each athlete in terms of performance and injury prevention. And the genetic profile test allows us to increasingly individualize planning and create training that is not only performance-oriented, but also preventative, using DNA, which is the human code. This isn't synonymous with victory, but the more resources we have to control and regulate training loads, the better," explains Tannure, who is also the medical director of the Brazilian Athletic Commission of MMA (CABMMA).
According to geneticist and technical director of the Biogenetika laboratory, Lia Kubelka, the tests will help Flamengo's coaching staff work on each player's strengths.
"The goal of the BIOsport exam is to evaluate characteristics that will allow us to better understand each individual's body and thus plan an entire course of action, such as specific training and nutrition, and directly reach potential. The most important thing is to move away from trial and error and seek a more effective result, working on each individual's strengths," explained Lia.
??Test is done through saliva
The test the Flamengo players underwent works as follows: each athlete deposited 2ml of saliva into an individual vial, and from the collected material, each athlete's DNA was isolated. The next step was genetic mapping.
Lia Kubelka further explains that human DNA contains markers (genetic variants of the organism) that are associated with some characteristics of metabolism.
"Genetic markers identify information about predispositions to muscle injuries, muscle fibers, body composition, physical recovery capacity before and after training and games, among other data that help to draw up a profile of each individual's body needs," he says.
