Flamengo's number one, captain, and idol. This is Bruno, the goalkeeper who arrived at Gávea in 1 and, since then, has earned nothing but respect and affection from everyone at the club. However, for his opponents, he's a nightmare. A scorer of great saves, a penalty saver, and a leader on the field, the goalkeeper starts 2006 with a high level of confidence against rival strikers. Despite this, he has nothing but praise for players like Fred, Abreu, and Dodô, the leading center-forwards for Fluminense, Botafogo, and Vasco, and is already predicting strong duels in the Campeonato Carioca.
Aware of the responsibility he will face when facing the top scorers of his rivals in the State Championship, Bruno doesn't hide and guarantees that he will do everything possible to stop them, and even takes the opportunity to send a message to his colleagues: Flamengo has the Emperor.
"As Joel Santana used to say, the wind that blows there, blows here. We have Adriano here. They are great, skilled attackers, and I have more and more responsibility to stop these guys," said the goalkeeper, already predicting which classic will be the center of attention in 2010: "The classics with Vasco will be very interesting," he added.
The goalkeeper has fond memories of the Campeonato Carioca. He won every one he played in, and in 2007 and 2009, he made history in penalty shootouts against Botafogo.
"I will always do what I can to help. If it comes to a penalty shootout, I will do my best, but I hope it is resolved in normal time," he said.
Bruno Fernandes Souza, 25, was born and raised at Atlético Mineiro and had a brief stint at Corinthians before arriving at Flamengo, where he established himself. At Gávea, he won three state championships and the 2009 Brazilian Championship. A player with a strong personality, leadership, and a strong connection with the club and its fans, he took over as captain after the retirement of defender Fabio Luciano.
