Flamengo vs. Atlético Paranaense is a game of goals. Many goals. The historical average for this matchup is 2,5 goals per game in Brazilian Championship matches. In 44 encounters, 111 goals were scored, and only four times did the net remain untouched: in 97, 2009, and 2016 in Curitiba, and in 1998 in Rio de Janeiro.
So, this Sunday promises goals. And speaking of goals against Atlético-PR, we have special moments in the history of this rivalry. That's what we're going to talk about today. Moments. We won't make a specific list of a player or titles. But of moments. Those moments that we don't forget for various reasons. So, sit back and enjoy. Today's BuzzFla will talk about Flamengo vs. Atlético-PR and our memories.
1. The Tri Game
To begin, let's ride the wave of Wednesday's qualification and remember the 2013 Copa do Brasil. That memorable final. First leg, down South, 1-1 draw. In Rio, 2-0 and the trophy at Gávea. Elias and Hernane scored the winning goals in front of a Maracanã packed with over 50 people. Two beautiful goals, but let's remember Elias here, the goal that brought relief.
The away goals rule still applied. With the score tied at 0-0, the title was ours, and the clock showed 42 minutes of the second half. The fans were still holding back their championship celebrations, but they were already starting to show signs of it. That's when Paulinho received the ball on the left, made a sensational dribble past Deivid, and passed to Elias, who volleyed it home to score the first goal of the night. Want to relive it? 2. Goal-goal-goal
Also, during the Conmebol Libertadores season, let's remember a moment from 2017. A packed Maracanã, a very complicated game, and a fantastic goal by Diego that made it 2-0 in the victory during the group stage of the competition. After 15 minutes, it was already 1-0 when Arão went down the right flank and crossed perfectly for Diego to volley home and hit the corner of the net. A spectacular goal to seal the victory. 3. The Return of the Emperor
Adriano returned in 2009 to win the Hexa (sixth World Cup title). And his debut was precisely against Atlético Paranaense on May 31st. More than 70 Flamengo fans filled the Maracanã to relive the magic of their homegrown star. And Adriano delivered. With a center forward in the box, Flamengo got fired up and went on the attack against their rivals. And just 14 minutes in, Adriano appeared in the box and startled Antonio Carlos, who, trying to intercept the cross, ended up putting it into his own net.
But his goal was still missing. The fans wanted it, and it came in the second half. Right in the first minute, Léo Moura went down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross for Adriano, who simply tapped it in. There it was, the goal everyone wanted to see. 4. That 3-0 win for Tri
The year 1983 was magical. The national championship was won for the third time in a row, and it was one of the most difficult. In the semi-final, Flamengo faced a powerful and dangerous Atlético Paranaense for a place in the final. In the first game, in a Maracanã that almost caught fire (literally) with more than 100 fans, Zico shone once again, scoring two goals, and Flamengo won 3-0.
This game is considered by many to be the greatest clash between the two teams in history. Perhaps because it involved the best and greatest Atlético team that ever existed against a special Flamengo. That Flamengo that ended the cycle that began in 1978 with Rondinelli's header and conquered the world and more in five years. Here we remember this moment again with the narration of Galvão Bueno.
