Next Saturday, at 4 pm, Flamengo faces Botafogo at the Luso-Brasileiro stadium on Ilha do Governador, in the 15th round of the Brazilian Championship. The duel is marked by different situations in the standings. Flamengo is fighting to stay in the top four, while its rival is fighting against the relegation zone. In a 2013 Copa do Brasil quarterfinal match, Flamengo thrashed Botafogo 4-0 at the Maracanã stadium. The ball seemed to have a magnet, forcing it to seek out striker Hernane's boot for much of the match. And even if it landed on his off-foot, the shot went wide, or went over the bar, the net would shake. With his left foot and a header, "Brocador" scored three goals—and even conceded a penalty converted by Léo Moura—in the red-and-black victory on the night of October 23, 2013. In one of the celebrations, the striker made a gesture as if throwing his heart to the fans. The Flamengo fans, the vast majority in the stadium, were grateful: the team had qualified for the Copa do Brasil semifinals. Since the first leg ended 1-1, any victory would have guaranteed a spot in what was the rivals' first meeting in the national competition. Flamengo was superior and knew how to exploit the plays on the left side of their attack, especially with Paulinho. They were fortunate enough to score the first goal, but tactically they were superior in front of 59.848 fans. The final goal fell to Léo Moura, who turned 35 on that day. #2 - Flamengo 2 x 2 Botafogo - 04/29/1979 - Undefeated Champion

Flamengo were already Rio de Janeiro champions when they reached their final match against Botafogo at the Macaranã stadium. If they hadn't lost, they would have been undefeated. Botafogo came looking to dampen Flamengo's spirits, but the red-and-blacks had Zico. And on an inspired afternoon, the Galinho scored twice in one of his finest performances in the Manto Sagrado. Gil and Luisinho Lemos even equalized for Botafogo, but Zico, calming his defense, which was eager to attack and win the game, held on until the final whistle. Flamengo were undefeated champions.

#3 - Flamengo 3 x 0 Botafogo - 12/07/1992 - 1st game of the final

The consecration of the experienced Maestro Júnior, "Vovô Garoto," and then-young Brazilian football talents like Gaúcho and Zinho, came with the 1992 Brazilian Championship. With the title, Flamengo became the most successful team in the competition's history, with five titles. The team from Gávea finished fourth in the first stage of the competition, qualifying for Group 1 of the second stage. In this stage, they finished first and secured a spot to face Botafogo, champion of Group 2, in the Championship final, making it the second final between Rio de Janeiro teams in Brasileirão history. With a squad composed primarily of players who came through the youth ranks, Flamengo entered the final with considerable misgivings, especially since they still boasted the already experienced Júnior as their star player. Furthermore, due to their better record, Botafogo entered with the advantage of two draws in the final matches. All of this went down the drain in the first game of the final. On July 12, 1992, Flamengo gave the black and whites a run for their money, putting in a stellar performance to take a 3-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Júnior, Nélio, and Gaúcho. Flamengo finished the qualifying round in fourth place, behind Vasco, Botafogo, and Bragantino, but rallied, eliminating Vasco, Santos, and São Paulo and reaching the final against Botafogo. Flamengo lost the first leg of the final 3-0, not counting the score. In the following game, when Botafogo needed a three-goal margin, a 2-2 draw was enough. Maestro Junior, leading the Nação Rubro-Negra, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute of the first half. Júlio César doubled the lead in the 10th minute of the second. Botafogo rallied and equalized through Pichetti and Valdeir, but to no avail: Flamengo won its fifth Brazilian title.

In a match valid for the third round of the 1981 Campeonato Carioca, Flamengo delivered a resounding 6-0 thrashing of Botafogo. The first goal came in the sixth minute, when Nunes connected with Adílio's cross from the right. In the 27th minute, a Nunes-Adílio one-two, the ball bounced off the defense and returned to Zico to make it 2-0. Botafogo couldn't get past the midfield. In the 33rd minute, Lico doubled the lead, making it 3-0. Six minutes later, Adílio scored the fourth, heading in a Zico free kick. The Flamengo fans clamored for a 6-0 victory, wanting revenge for the score they'd suffered years before. In the 29th minute, Rocha brought down Adílio in the box, Zico furiously took the penalty and converted: 5-0. With just three minutes remaining, Adílio crossed from the left, Zico rose into the box and Jorge Luís hit the ball wide, but perfectly for Andrade, Mengão's number six, who hit a late shot into the left corner of Paulo Sérgio's goal. That was it. 6-0.
