In another direct clash in the Brazilian Championship, Rubro-Negro faces Atlético-MG next Sunday (10). The game, valid for the 14th round, will be held at Mané Garrincha, in Brasília, at 11 am. The teams are, respectively, in seventh and ninth place, both with 20 points. The Mais Querido has the best number of victories. To get in the mood for the interstate classic, we decided to remember some historic clashes.

In the first leg of the 1980 Brazilian Championship final, Flamengo and Atlético-MG played a duel marked by violence. Flamengo played without Zico, who was injured, and Éder fractured Rondinelli's jaw in a tackle. Rondinelli fell unconscious, his eyes rolling back in his head. He came to, got to his feet, and, even though he wasn't sure where he was, said he would continue playing—and then fainted again. He was substituted, and his teammates spent the rest of the match fearing for his life. Atlético won 1-0 and would play for a draw in Rio. Their goal was scored by Reinaldo.

In the final at the Maracanã, in front of 164 fans, the Atlético fans' violence and mischief were of no avail. Flamengo had Zico back, and Nunes, who would begin his consecration as the top scorer in major finals. The first half, a grueling affair, ended with Flamengo leading 2-1. In the locker room, Coutinho read a letter to the team: it was from Rondinelli, written in the hospital, with his jaw held together by wires and screws. The "God of Race" exhorted: "Let's go for it, teammates!" As if indebted to Rondinelli, Flamengo came out swinging for the second half. Reinaldo, a great player from Minas Gerais who, barely able to walk on the field with a sprain, still managed to equalize for Atlético MG. But Nunes, who had already scored the first goal, went it alone and scored the third, the title-winning goal—and the one that won the 1981 Copa Libertadores. The clash between Atlético-MG and Flamengo is still considered to be the best Brazilian Championship final of all time, such was the competition and quality of both teams.

That year, both first-round clashes in the Libertadores Cup ended 2-2. An extra game was necessary because only the first-place team in Group 3 would advance to the semifinals, and the two Brazilian teams had eight points. Atlético-MG had the Red-Blacks in their sights after their defeat in the 1980 Brazilian Championship final. However, it was to no avail. The match was marked by violent play and ended in the 37th minute of the first half, as Atlético suffered three red cards and two injuries, leaving them without the minimum number of players on the field. Thus, Flamengo was declared the winner. That year, the "Mais Querido" (Flamengo) became Copa Libertadores champions and subsequently World Champions.

In the second game of the 1987 Brazilian Championship semifinal, Flamengo defeated Atlético-MG with a score of 3 to 2, at Mineirão. The scorers were Chiquinho and Sérgio Araújo, for Atlético-MG, and Bebeto, Zico and Renato Gaúcho, for Flamengo.

Zico, during his time at Flamengo, scored 508 goals in 732 matches. One of his favorite victims was Atlético-MG, their rivals next Sunday (10). The Galinho de Quitino scored 9 goals in 19 matches, an average of 0,47 per game.

In the quarterfinals of the 2006 Copa do Brasil, Flamengo defeated Atlético-MG 4-1 at the Maracanã stadium. The scorers were Jônatas, Renato (2), and Obina for Flamengo, and Marinho for Atlético-MG. In the return leg at the Minerão stadium, the match ended 0-0. The result advanced the Red-Blacks to the semifinals of the competition. In the end, the Greatest in the World became the two-time Copa do Brasil champions with two victories over Vasco da Gama.
