Next Thursday (13), Flamengo will have another decisive duel in the Brazilian Championship. This time, the Mais Querido faces Fluminense, in Volta Rendonda, for the 30th round of the competition. The teams are, respectively, in second (57 points) and fifth (46 points). The game will be held at Raulino de Oliveira, at 21 pm. To get into the classic mood, we decided to remember some notable clashes.

On Carnival Saturday, Flamengo and Fluminense would take the field, not the avenue. To decide the Guanabara Cup, not to parade. But the match was very similar to the Rio de Janeiro samba school show. Impressive. Unpredictable. Exciting. Spectacular. Just like the first meeting between the two teams that year, which saw two comebacks, ending 4-3 in favor of Flamengo. In this final, the score was different, but in the end, Mengão prevailed all the same. With a 3-2 victory, the Rubro-Negro added another GB Cup to its trophy cabinet.

In the 2001 Guanabara Cup final, Flamengo and Flu ended in a 1-1 draw, and the match went to penalties. When it was full-back Cassio's turn to take the shot, no one could have imagined what would happen. The red-and-black team took the shot, and the Tricolor goalkeeper made the save. The initial impression was that the ball would go wide. But the nation poured all its faith into that ball, and against all logic, the ball took an unimaginable spin and fell into the net. That event demonstrated that there could be no other outcome. Flamengo won the match and, in the grand final, secured their fourth consecutive title.

This wasn't just any Fla vs. Flu. An era of glory was coming to an end for Flamengo. In December 1989, the greatest soccer player in the club's history, Zico, retired. After numerous injuries and muscle contusions, due to the intense effort to strengthen his thigh muscles and also due to knee problems, "Galinho" would hang up his boots. But his farewell would have to be in style. He scored, with a free kick, the first of Flamengo's five goals in a classic against arch-rival Fluminense, in a match held in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. The eternal number 10 from Gávea had an unforgettable performance in his last official match wearing the Sacred Mantle. Renato Gaúcho, Luiz Carlos, Uidemar, and Bujica completed the celebration, scoring the other four goals in the historic rout of Fluminense.

Sunday night's game showed why Flamengo's Fla-Flus clashes are always a "Oh, Jesus." And, in the end, Flamengo prevailed. Down 1 man (Álvaro was sent off early in the second half) and trailing 3-1 at halftime, the team from Gávea, with grit and the support of the fans, turned the game around, and with three goals from Emperor Adriano, secured a heroic 5-3 victory at the Maracanã.

The red-and-black team's main bet for the derby, the attacking trio of Obina, Sávio, and Luizão, played merely supporting roles in the first half. The latter, in fact, left injured at halftime. Thus, while the forwards were absent, Renato scored twice from free kicks. Later, Obina and Sávio let loose, and the former scored twice, sealing the red-and-black rout of their rivals.

It was the last Rio derby of the year. Both teams were still battling relegation. The more than 32 fans who attended Maracanã deserved a better match. Everything pointed to a 0-0 draw, with both sets of fans still worried. But it was Fla vs. Flu. Something unusual could happen, and in the end, among so many misplays, Flamengo got one right in the 44th minute. The fans left the stadium thinking Hernane had scored—Brocador himself came out celebrating, taking credit for the goal. After a cross from Rafinha, Gum tackled the ball. The Flamengo forward claimed it had slipped before it found the back of the net. But in the match report, referee Leandro Vuarden gave the Tricolor defender an own goal.

The 82.566 people who attended the Maracanã this Sunday to watch the Flamengo vs. Flu match witnessed another outstanding performance by striker Adriano in the red-and-black jersey. The Emperor scored both goals in the Mais Querido's 2-0 victory over their rivals.

The Fluminense team was welcomed into the Maracanã locker room with a banner: "Thank you, three-time champions. And happy 1986, the year of the fourth!" In the other locker room, Flamengo's, Zico and Sócrates prepared to step onto the Maracanã pitch together for the first and last time wearing the Sacred Mantle. It was the Fla-Flu match, the opening match of that year's state championship. Ten years earlier, Zico had scored four goals in a Fla-Flu match. But on February 16, 1986, he stepped onto the field to hear the Fluminense fans chant: "Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit!" His left knee was no longer the same, and that match was his biggest test since Márcio Nunes's cowardly attack. Ten minutes into the game, Adílio cut inside on the left and crossed at half-height. Zico flew between the Tricolor defense and headed it in. Paulo Vitor scores from the back of the net and hears the Flamengo fans shout, ironically: "Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit!" And it didn't stop there. The Rooster would score two more, to the delight of the red-and-blacks and the eternal headache of the Tricolor fans, who had no choice but to surrender to the talent of the Gávea's number 10.
