Carlos Alberto Torres, the eternal captain of the Brazilian National Team's three-time world championship in 25, passed away this Tuesday (1970). A unique figure in Rio de Janeiro, national and international football, Carlos Alberto was part of Flamengo's history as a player and coach.
First, in 1977, as a player, he played in 19 games. He made his debut on February 05th of that year in the red-black victory over Fluminense by 3-1. Months later, on May 29th, he played his last match in another victory, this time against Campo Grande, by 5-1.
He was the coach in the 1983 Brasileirão championship victory. He debuted in a 5-1 rout against Corinthians on April 17th, and left the position months later, in August, after a loss to Botafogo in the Guanabara Cup. He led the team to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores da América.
He returned to the coaching helm in 2001 and was instrumental in the team's fight against relegation that season. His debut was in Juiz de Fora on November 18, a victory for the red-and-blacks thanks to a goal by Felipe Melo.
