Proving they have the talent to wear the Flamengo jersey and honor the sacred mantle when needed. That's what the young players from the Gávea team want to do in the 2010 U-23 Football Cup. With a squad that likely includes some nationally recognized players, Flamengo will be looking for another title to add to its trophy cabinet starting next Sunday, when it debuts in the competition against Fluminense.
However, for these players, this championship is worth much more than a medal. It's a golden opportunity to prove themselves to Flamengo's new coaching staff and the fans. In addition to the youngsters, other older players will also be able to play and gain game rhythm, allowing them to be included in the first team, if Silas so desires.
"It's important to show our worth. We know they'll be watching, and we'll do everything we can to project a good image. We'll only have big teams, some games will be broadcast on television, and it's definitely our chance to show we can be used in the first team," said midfielder Camacho, who even played a few matches for the senior team this year.
Kicking off the campaign with a classic is an added motivation for the Gávea team. A Fla vs. Flu match is always a different game, especially for players who have come up through the ranks, like Camacho, who grew accustomed to facing the Tricolor in the youth ranks.
"It's always good to play a classic. Starting a championship like this is good. It's a great opportunity for us to play well and try to start the competition on the right foot," he said.
In addition to recently promoted players like Lenon and Saba, Flamengo fans will be able to see some of the team's new signings for this year, such as Marquinhos, Borja, and goalkeeper Vinícius. All players under 23 years old who were not included in the squad for this midweek match against Prudente are available.
