History
Flamengo arrives undefeated in its first South American final. The "Mais Querido" entered the second phase of the competition, debuting against Palestino (Chile). In both matches, they won twice (5-2 and 5-0) and qualified.
In the next stage, Flamengo faced Chapecoense, drawing the first leg (0-0) and winning the second leg in Rio (4-0). Then, in the regional derby against Fluminense, in the quarterfinals, winning the first leg 1-0 and drawing the second leg 3-3. In the semifinals, Flamengo beat Junior Barranquilla twice, in Rio and in Colombia (2-1 and 2-0), qualifying for the final.
Flamengo could become the fifth undefeated champion in the history of the Copa Conmebol Sudamericana. In the 15 editions of the competition, only four teams have won the title without defeat (Internacional in 2008; Universidad de Chile in 2011; São Paulo in 2012; River Plate in 2014).
Flamengo's last international title was 18 years ago, in the 1999 Mercosul Cup. The decision was against Palmeiras, with the first game in Rio ending in a red-black victory (4x3) and the second, in São Paulo, ending in a draw (3x3) and with the title for the team from Gávea.
Independiente and Flamengo have not faced each other for 16 years. The last time the teams met was in the quarterfinals of the now-defunct Mercosul Cup, in 2001. On that occasion, the Brazilians eliminated the Argentines with a goalless draw in Buenos Aires (10/24/01) and a 4-0 thrashing in Taguatinga (10/31/01), with two goals from defender Juan, the only Flamengo player who was in the title of that competition.
Striker Felipe Vizeu scored five goals in the 2017 South American Championship and is the competition's top scorer, tied with Jhon Cifuentes (Universidad Católica-Ecuador) and Luis Rodriguez (Atlético Tucumán-Argentina). In the history of South American competitions, Flamengo has had the top scorer four times: Zico (11-1981), Tita (08-1984), Gaúcho (08-1991) and Romário (08-1999).
