Clássico dos Milhões ends goalless at Maracanã
The attackers' debuts were overshadowed by the defense's good performances and the match ended 0-0.

Despite debuts in both attacks, Flamengo and Vasco were unable to break the deadlock this Sunday (01.08) at Maracanã. The Flamengo and Vasco fans tried hard, but neither Val Baiano and Borja on one side nor Felipe and Zé Roberto on the other managed to find the net in what was likely the last Clássico dos Milhões at the Biggest Stadium in the World before renovations for the 2014 World Cup.
With the result, Flamengo now occupies eighth place in the table, with 17 points, three behind Ceará, fourth place and first member of the G4. Vasco, in turn, is in 15th, with 14 points. Next Sunday (08.08), Rubro-Negro will go to Pacaembu to face the vice-leader Corinthians, which has 25.
Lukewarm draw
The opening 45 minutes of the derby had the feel of a Flamengo vs. Vasco match: with excellent balance, tight marking, and the usual anxiety of a game of this magnitude, which led to poor passing. Flamengo's first clear chance fell to Kleberson, after a good pass from Juan, in the sixth minute. The number 15 burst into the box and fired a powerful shot over Fernando Prass's goal.
After that, the teams tried to attack, but both sides lacked the final pass. Vasco tried to use Felipe as a reference point, but could only threaten with long-range shots. Meanwhile, the red-and-blacks sought to equip the new attacking duo of Borja and Val Baiano.
But while expectations were high for the forwards making their debuts on both sides, it was the defense that stood out most in the first half. For Vasco, Correa and Willians gave little space to the Cruzmaltino's creative play, and for Vasco, the defensive trio of Nilton, Dedé, and Fernando prevented Val and Borja from having any chances to score.
Fla's pressure
The second half also started very evenly, with Flamengo having the first big chance to score. Kleberson once again scored. Five minutes in, he received a good pass into the box and struck powerfully. Fernando Prass made a good save. It was just the beginning of an electrifying 45 minutes. If the first half was lackluster, the second half saw more scoring chances, enthusiastic fans, and a lot of energy on both sides.
In the 11th minute, Flamengo threatened again. After a corner from the left, Jean headed it in, Val Baiano controlled it, turned, and fired a low shot wide. Vasco retaliated in the 23rd minute, when Carlos Alberto was released and raced one-on-one against Jean, but the Flamengo defender prevailed. In the 32nd minute, Marcelo Lomba saved Flamengo from a Fagner shot inside the box after a through ball from Eder Luis.
Despite the efforts of both teams, however, the score remained unchanged. In the 40th minute, Flamengo had a spectacular sequence of scoring chances, but Fernando Prass performed a miracle in Vasco's goal, saving three shots in a row: one from Borja and two from Juan. In the last minute, Prass made another great save on a Petkovic free kick, and the match ended 0-0. A result that pleased neither Flamengo nor Vasco.
