Everyone knows that the mystique of Flamengo's fans exists. And it will be with this 'player' that Flamengo will take the field this Saturday (November 20.11th), at 19:30 pm, at Engenhão, for a decisive match against Guarani, for the Brasileirão. In recent years, whenever it has had the nation supporting it, Flamengo has achieved its goals, and everyone at the club hopes that this will happen again.
The board promoted the match, the fans responded, and the players got excited. All that's needed is to translate that onto the field. At least that's what financial manager Mercio Querido de Figueiredo, 39, hopes for. Present at every game of the 2009 campaign, which culminated in the title, he committed the 'heresy' of missing four Flamengo matches this year, but all of them were away from Rio. "This is still eating me up inside," he stated.
However, on Saturday at Engenhão, Mercio will be present and hopes that all Flamengo fans will put pressure on their opponent, who is in a critical situation in the Brasileirão.
"A full stadium makes a difference. It counts psychologically for both sides. We have to remember that the Guarani team will probably enter the field tense. It's a decisive match and, even though our campaign hasn't been very exciting, the expression 'playing away against Flamengo' in itself already carries considerable weight. Finally, we can do a real 'test drive' for next year," said Mercio, even venturing a guess.
"I think we're going to win 2-1. We'll go up by 2 and then, driven by our Rio de Janeiro way of looking at life, we'll risk a few excessive tricks and they'll reduce the score. There's no way around it, that's just how we are. It seems like we have a pact with adrenaline."
On the field, the players have already promised commitment, but beyond that, they will show respect to the more than 30 fans who will be at the Engenhão stadium. Some of them have even experienced this before, like captain Léo Moura.
"Flamengo fans are like that. We know they'll go anywhere, whether the situation is good or bad. I used to be a fan and I know what it's like. I've left home early to get to the stadium and find a good spot. I've seen many good and bad games, and the important thing is that I learned that it was always important to be there. I'm sure Flamengo fans think the same way," said the right-back.
Also a Flamengo fan since childhood, striker Deivid has been confirmed in the attack, alongside Diogo, and will have the opportunity to play for the first time in the Flamengo jersey at a packed Engenhão stadium.
"It's very important that the fans go to the stadium and support us throughout the game. But they have to be patient. I believe this will be a very balanced, hard-fought game, and it won't be easy to get the win. It will be a game decided by the details," he explained.
But if he can count on Mercio's support and understanding, Deivid can rest assured.
"I never base my Flamengo support on results. I was present at more than 90% of the games in the years when we fought dramatically against relegation. When we win a championship, I look at the packed stadium and always think, with pride: 'how good it is to know that when things aren't going so well, I'll still be here anyway'," he concluded.
