The game
The derby started hotly with a foul from behind by Nenê on Gabi, but the referee opted not to issue a yellow card. In the eighth minute, Flamengo created their first threat. Lázaro delivered a beautiful pass to Arrascaeta behind Léo Matos. The Uruguayan tried to pass to Pedro, who was closing down the six-yard box, but Vasco's defense cleared the ball.
Needing goals, Vasco adopted a more offensive stance and marked Flamengo's ball high, while Flamengo tried to attack with ease. In the 23rd minute, Hugo made a great save from Nenê's beautiful shot from the edge of the box.
Lázaro then passed the ball to Pedro, who fired a powerful first-time shot from inside the box. Thiago Rodrigues made a great save, and Gabi tried to shoot on the rebound, but the Vasco defense blocked it.
In the final stretch of the first half, Mais Querido began to dominate possession and exchanged passes in their attacking half. In the 40th minute, the red-and-black attack made another good move. Arrascaeta exchanged passes with Arão and crossed to Gabigol inside the box. The striker attempted a bicycle kick, but the ball went over the goal.
In a very busy first half, the teams went into the break with the score tied and no goals.
The red-and-blacks' first attack of the second half was dangerous. Arrascaeta lifted the ball into the box, and Filipe Luís headed it over the crossbar. In the 8th minute, Mengão opened the scoring! Arrascaeta once again lifted the ball into the box, Lázaro deflected it into the six-yard box, and Arão tapped it in for a 1-0 goal.
In the 17th minute, Arrascaeta played a beautiful through ball to Gabi between the defenders. He attempted a chip over the goalkeeper, but the ball went wide. Around the 25th minute, Coach Paulo Sousa brought on Léo Pereira, Marinho, and Vitinho in place of David Luiz, Arrascaeta, and Lázaro, respectively.
In the closing stages of the match, Flamengo managed to maintain possession in attack, managing their advantage well. In the 37th minute, Marinho received the ball wide on the right, cut inside, and took a shot. The ball went wide of the post.
With a solid performance, without any major scares, Mengão left the field with the victory and qualification for the Cariocão final, the fourth consecutive.
