A great start! Flamengo took to the field for the first time in the FIFA Club World Cup and comfortably defeated Tunisia's Espérance 2-0 in Philadelphia. Arrascaeta and Luiz Araújo scored the red-and-black goals on Monday night (16) at Lincoln Financial Field. With the result, Mengão leads Group D of the competition with three points, the same number as Chelsea, but with fewer yellow cards.

The game

Flamengo started the match valuing possession, exchanging passes from the defensive half to the attack to try to open up space in Espérance's defense. The red-and-black team dominated the action in the opening minutes, proposing the play and seizing the initiative. In the 14th minute, Luiz Araújo took a corner kick to the near post, and Léo Ortiz headed the ball over the bar.

On the next play, Mengão opened the scoring in Philadelphia! Varela received the ball on the right and crossed to Luiz Araújo, who laid it off in the middle of the box. Arrascaeta appeared to finish past the goalkeeper, putting Flamengo ahead: 1-0. It was the Uruguayan's 13th goal, the top scorer for Flamengo this season.

Espérance took the lead and narrowly missed out on a second goal. Gerson collected the rebound inside the box and unleashed a powerful shot that Ben Said saved well. In the final minutes of the first half, Espérance pressed their opponents and had a chance to score a second, but went into the break with a partial 1-0 lead and complete control of the match.

Flamengo returned unchanged for the second half and continued to value possession. Just six minutes in, Flamengo created a significant threat. Ayrton Lucas played a one-two with Gerson, got to the byline, and sent a low cross into the six-yard box. Pedro misplaced the ball, and the goalkeeper punched it away. Following the play, the number 9 again had possession at the edge of the box and shot wide.

The first changes to the red-and-black team came around the 20th minute. Plata and Bruno Henrique came on for Gerson and Pedro, respectively. Just when Espérance was looking better, Mengão stepped up and scored the second. Jorginho, the night's debutant, delivered a great pass to Luiz Araújo, who carefully adjusted the ball and fired a shot into the corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance: 2-0.

In the final minutes, Flamengo held on to their advantage and, with a clear superiority, emerged victorious and top of Group D of the Club World Cup. It's worth noting that Flamengo currently has three points, level with Chelsea. In the tiebreaker, Flamengo leads the standings due to having received fewer yellow cards than the English side.
