In the third round of the Cariocão, Flamengo thrashed Nova Iguaçu 5-0 on Saturday afternoon (21), at Maracanã. Mengão's goals were scored by Pedro (2), Fabrício Bruno and Gabi (2). In the next round, the Most Beloved faces Bangu at Raulino de Oliveira.
The game
Due to the intense heat, the match started at a slower pace. Flamengo tried to exchange passes to find space in Nova Iguaçu's defense. In the 8th minute, the red-and-black team's first good attack came from Cebolinha on the left. The striker cut inside and took a shot. The goalkeeper made the save.
In the 12th minute, Mengão opened the scoring at the Maracanã! Matheuzinho made a good run down the right, got to the byline, and sent a low cross into the box. Pedro, always well positioned, struck firmly to score Flamengo's first goal: 1-0.
It didn't take long for Flamengo to double their lead. Cebolinha took a free kick from the left edge of the box and placed the ball perfectly for Fabrício Bruno to head into the back of the net: 2-0.
Even with the lead, Mais Querido didn't slow down and continued to pressure Nova Iguaçu in their own half. In the 36th minute, Matheus França received the ball inside the box, controlled it with his chest, and tried to flick it past the goalkeeper, but the ball ended up being deflected and went out for a corner. At the end of the first half, Matheus Alves received his second yellow card, leaving the team from Baixada Fluminense with ten men.
With the lead, the Red-Blacks had the freedom to exchange passes in attack. Coach Vitor Pereira made changes to his lineup, bringing in Gabi, Arrascaeta, Everton Ribeiro, Thiago Maia, and Léo Pereira.
The changes paid off and Mengão scored the third in the 16th minute. Arrascaeta made a great pass to Matheuzinho, who set up Gabi to hit it hard and send it into the goal: 3-0.
And it turned into a rout! After the technical timeout, Flamengo's number 10 scored his second goal of the game. In the 21st minute, Filipe Luís delivered a perfect cross for Gabigol to head into the goalkeeper's left corner to make it 4-0.
The fifth goal came naturally in the 28th minute. Arrascaeta delivered a precise free kick that Pedro headed into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. It was the number 9's second goal, which sealed the victory at the Maracanã Stadium: 5-0.
