With debuts, Flamengo defeats Cruzeiro and silences Mineirão

The result took Rubro-Negro to seventh place in the Brazilian Championship

Last Wednesday night (15) was marked by reunions. After almost 30 years, world champion Mozer made his debut for Mais Querido, this time as the club's new football manager. From one of the stadium's boxes, the former defender was able to watch his fellow debutant, Réver, score the winning goal for the red-and-black team in the 43rd minute of the first half, breaking a 15-year streak of not beating Cruzeiro at Mineirão Stadium. The result left Mengão in seventh place with 13 points, the same score as Santos, the last team in the Libertadores qualifying zone.

After two losses, Flamengo bounced back and won again in the Brazilian Championship. Debutant Réver played well and actively participated in both the defensive and offensive plays. Besides scoring, he narrowly missed extending the lead with a beautiful first-time shot.

In the 21st minute of the second half, Marcelo Cirino scored Flamengo's second goal, deflecting a cross from Alan Patrick into the box, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call from the linesman.

"I practiced this play a lot and got good results. My height makes a difference. We know we can improve, but the important thing was to achieve our goal. We beat a great team that also started the competition as favorites. But we have to work hard. There's no point in winning away and losing at home," said Réver, with his feet firmly on the ground.

"We talked a lot about set pieces. We discussed how we wanted the ball to be played into the box, and we made great use of it. Alan Patrick's set piece is a no-brainer, and it had an impact. We want to improve because it makes a difference," reiterated the rookie defender.

Coach Zé Ricardo stated that his players' performance exceeded his expectations. "They hadn't trained together much, but we believed that with experience they would overcome their difficulties. Everything went well. It was a performance beyond my expectations. We managed to hold off Cruzeiro's attack, especially late on, and from an attacking set piece, we scored the winning goal," he concluded.
