With the star power - and a lot of talent - of the debutant Guerrero, combined with the great performance of the entire red-black team, Flamengo broke, on Wednesday night (08.07), a 13-year taboo of not beating Internacional in opponent's domain. The Mais Querido scored 2-1 on the scoreboard: the Peruvian striker opened the scoring, ten minutes into the first half and then served as a waiter for Éverton to close the account, 20 minutes into the second half.
"The team played well today, focused. They didn't give the opponent any space. I knew the squad we have, I've already faced my teammates. I didn't think I would score, but I knew we would win. We needed confidence, and today was a fresh start," Guerrero said after the final whistle. The striker scored a goal, but each member-fan is also part of this play. With the result, Mais Querido reached 13 points and occupies 13th place in the Campeonato Carioca table. The next match in the competition will be against Corinthians, Sunday (12.07), at 16 pm, at Maracanã, for the 13th round. Find out how to buy your ticket.
The game
In the second minute of the match, Emerson crossed from the right, and Canteros and Guerrero stretched to reach the ball, but it went wide, the first dangerous play of the match. The move was a rehearsal for Flamengo's goal: eight minutes later, the Argentine midfielder headed the ball toward the center of the six-yard box, and the Peruvian striker scored his first goal for the Sacred Mantle, shooting with his heel into the back of the net. The match remained more evenly balanced, with both teams seeking to attack and the game being tightly contested in the middle of the field. Approaching the half-hour mark, Flamengo increased offensively and was stopped by fouls from their opponents. This pace continued until halftime.
In the second half, Internacional attacked more, but without posing any danger, thus opening up space for Flamengo to mount some serious counterattacks. Then, in the 20th minute, Guerrero once again demonstrated why he's one of the best strikers on the continent. With class and vision, the Peruvian played the ball into the path of Éverton, who slotted a beautiful shot into the top corner: 2-0 for Flamengo. Five minutes later, Cáceres played a striker's pass, cut past two defenders, and shot, but Muriel saved. Soon after, the midfielder showed his attacking prowess in a play with Éverton. The Paraguayan crossed for the midfielder, but the number 22 couldn't reach the ball. In the 34th minute, Flamengo responded with Vitinho, who made a good run in the box and took a shot, but Marcelo saved and cleared the danger. Cristóvão's first substitution came in the 38th minute, taking off Cáceres and bringing on Márcio Araújo. Internacional's goal found a goal in the 47th minute, but the victory went to Flamengo.
