The game
Just three minutes into the match, Everton Ribeiro delivered a perfect cross for Pedro to finish with a perfect bicycle kick; the ball sailed just wide of Cássio's right post, lifting the nation in the stands in what would become a memorable goal. Corinthians first threatened in the 12th minute, but goalkeeper Santos made a good save. In the 16th minute, Flamengo had another great chance to open the scoring: a superb cross from Rodinei, Everton Ribeiro headed the ball as expected, and the ball skimmed the crossbar. In the 25th minute, the opponent had an opportunity with a free kick from Willian on the left edge of the penalty area, but Santos safely saved. The following minute, David Luiz made a providential cut in the six-yard box. In the 32nd minute, Flamengo threatened again: Ribeiro delivered a superb low pass to Rodinei inside the penalty area; the full-back crossed, but the opposing defense cleared. A few minutes later, another shot hit Cássio's post, this time from Gabigol's long-range shot. It was a first half with chances for both sides, but with more real scoring chances and more possession for the Mais Querido.
In the second half, the opponent began to take the initiative in attack and created a few dangerous chances, but it was Flamengo who opened the scoring. Six minutes into the second half, Pedro scored with a sliding tackle after a beautiful three-finger cross from Arrascaeta: 1-0 and a huge celebration from the World's Biggest Fanbase. The Uruguayan returned to the field inspired: moments after the assist, the number 14 passed to Gabi, who shot with his right foot, forcing Cássio into a great save. In the 17th minute, this time from a free kick, Arrascaeta sent the ball to David Luiz, who headed the ball wide of the net.
The match was already shaping up to be a red-and-black victory when, in the 22nd minute, Bruno Méndez was sent off for handball on the edge of the penalty area. Fueled by a Nação light show and with numerical superiority, Dorival Júnior's team dominated the match. In the 28th minute, Thiago Maia made a good run down the right and crossed for Gabigol, who shot straight at Cássio; the number 9 hit the rebound, but Balbuena cleared it. Until the final whistle, Flamengo created chances, but it was Pedro's goal that sealed the match.
