By Chico Freire - in
A Sunday of classics... and a Flamengo victory. The Nilton Santos Municipal Stadium hosted the match between Flamengo and Botafogo on the 28th, witnessing another Flamengo triumph. Arturo Vidal scored the only goal of the night, and the "Mais Querido" defeated their rivals 1-0.
The next match for the red-black team is next Wednesday (01/09), at 21:30 pm, against Vélez Sarsfield, in a match valid for the CONMEBOL Libertadores semifinal. In the Brazilian Championship, the Most Beloved returns to the field next Sunday (04/09), at 11 am, against Ceará, at Maracanã. The Nação Rubro-Negra has already sold out the available tickets for this match.
The game
In the first half, the teams played evenly. With both defenses well-positioned, clear-cut chances were few and far between. Santos saved shots from Botafogo in the eighth and 22nd minutes, while Cebolinha threatened the Botafogo goal in the fifteenth minute with a corner kick. The "Mais Querido" gradually managed to control possession and increase the tempo of their plays. As a result, they gained ground and created increasingly frequent attacking plays. In the 45th minute of the first half, Victor Hugo surprised the opposing defense, went to the byline, and was brought down by the full-back, who received a yellow card. The halftime score remained unchanged, 0-0.
At halftime, Dorival Júnior made two changes that would prove crucial, bringing on Pedro and Everton Ribeiro. Five minutes into the second half, it was clear that Flamengo would increase its intensity and dominance. The opponent tried to impose itself physically, but Flamengo's quality prevailed. The score was opened fifteen minutes into the second half: Matheuzinho crossed from the right, Pedro controlled, and Vidal tapped the ball into the corner. The goal further increased the tempo of the Mais Querido's game. Two minutes later, with a well-worked play, the ball reached Matheuzinho, who played a one-two with Pedro and was stopped by the goalkeeper. In the 18th minute, Pedro created a great chance, dribbling past two defenders before shooting wide.
Flamengo maintained control of the match despite Botafogo's attacks. Dorival made another change to the starting lineup, taking off Gabi and Vidal for Arrascaeta and João Gomes. Diego replaced Erick Pulgar, who made his debut that night. The match continued without any major setbacks until the final whistle.
The Most Beloved reached 43 points in the Brasileirão, occupying second place in the competition.
