The Under-23 Cup is a great opportunity for players who haven't been used in the first team to show their worth and try to earn new chances with the senior squad. But it's not only for those who have already worn the Flamengo jersey professionally that the competition is considered very beneficial. For young players who are still seeking their first chances to play for the senior team, the championship is also considered a great showcase.
And the more experienced players have nothing but praise for the young Flamengo players. Last Sunday, the team's three oldest players (Fernando, Leo Medeiros, and Leandro Amaral) were replaced by youngsters (Vander, Juninho, and China), and it was precisely with these promising players on the field that they managed to open the scoring against Palmeiras. Palmeiras then equalized, and in the penalty shootout, Flamengo prevailed with Vinícius saving three shots.
"It's important to know that we can trust each other. Even the younger players. Even during warm-up I told Vander: 'Warm up well because we're going to need you today,' and in his very first play he gave me the pass to start the play that led to Borja's goal. We know we can count on both the more experienced players and the younger ones," said midfielder Rômulo, who, despite having already played in Libertadores games for the professional team, is only 23 years old, ten of which have been spent at Flamengo.
Defender Henrique, who played as a left-back in last weekend's match, is happy with the confidence his coach and teammates have in his football and hopes to help Flamengo achieve another victory next Saturday (September 02.09nd) against Internacional at Beira Rio.
"This is a great opportunity for us, and we're trying to showcase our work in the best way possible. The players here are talented and want to prove it. I'm happy to have this opportunity. Whether in central defense or at full-back, I'll try to give my best to always help Flamengo," he concluded.
